After leaving Moat Boy’s Intermediate school Leicester in 1955, he was taken on by the Leicester firm Gent & Co Ltd as a shop boy. After studying at evening classes and gaining a scholarship he was offered an apprenticeship as a Scientific Instrument Maker. In his studies at the Leicester College of Technology he gained National and Higher National Certificates in Electrical Engineering. In 1963 to take up a position in the Experimental Department improving and developing new products, eventually becoming manager of the department. Continuing his studies in Horology with the British Horological Institute (BHI), Industrial Management at Vaughn College and later Quality Assurance at Nene College Northampton, led to a number of positions in Gent management with acceptance as a Fellow by the British Horological Institute, in 1974. After managing the manufacture of many of the products and the design of special systems for Time Control and Fire Detection and Alarm, he specialised in Quality Assurance and the Testing and Certification of the products and systems. This work for the company and later for the British Fire Protection Systems Association (BFPSA) - their trade association led to his involvement with British Standards (BSI), European Standards Bodies (CEN/CENELEC) and World Standards Bodies (ISO/IEC).
